Marine Atlantic Announces $270 Million Investment in Newfoundland and Labrador Infrastructure
Placentia, NL – June 25, 2026 – The Placentia Chamber of Commerce is pleased to recognize Chamber member Marine Atlantic for its announcement of approximately $270 million in infrastructure investments across Newfoundland and Labrador as part of a larger $350 million multi-year capital infrastructure modernization program.
Among those attending the announcement in Argentia were Member of Parliament, The Honourable Joanne Thompson; President and CEO of Marine Atlantic, Murray Hupman; MHA Sherry Gambin-Walsh, Placentia St. Mary’s District; Mayor Jamie Neville of the Town of Placentia; representatives from Marine Atlantic and the Port of Argentia; and Pam Constantine, President of the Placentia Chamber of Commerce. They joined government officials, industry stakeholders, and community leaders in recognizing this significant milestone.
The investment represents a major commitment to strengthening transportation infrastructure that is vital to residents, businesses, visitors, and the commercial trucking industry. As the constitutionally mandated marine link in the Trans-Canada Highway, Marine Atlantic plays a critical role in connecting Newfoundland and Labrador with mainland Canada.
A substantial portion of the planned investments will directly benefit the Argentia terminal, including upgrades to ferry ramps and electrical infrastructure to support shore power capabilities. Additional improvements in Port aux Basques will include dock extensions, auto-mooring technology upgrades, enhanced navigation infrastructure, and the planned removal of Vardy’s Rock to improve marine safety and efficiency.
These projects are expected to enhance service reliability, increase operational efficiency, improve environmental sustainability, and support the long-term delivery of safe and dependable ferry services that communities and businesses rely on every day.
The Placentia Chamber of Commerce applauds Marine Atlantic’s continued investment in critical transportation infrastructure and recognizes the positive economic impact these improvements will have on the region, local businesses, tourism, supply chains, and community connectivity.
“Marine Atlantic’s investment demonstrates confidence in the future of our region and reinforces Argentia’s strategic importance as a transportation gateway for Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Pam Constantine, President of the Placentia Chamber of Commerce. “These infrastructure improvements will support economic growth, strengthen supply chains, and enhance services that are essential to businesses and residents alike.”
The Chamber congratulates Marine Atlantic, President and CEO Murray Hupman, and all partners involved in advancing this important initiative for the province and the communities it serves.
